The type of firewood you buy depends on what you are going to use it for. If you will be burning the wood outdoors, it largely does not matter what type of wood you use. If you are burning the wood indoors, hard wood is an excellent choice.

As you might guess by the name, hardwood is more dense than softwood. Hardwood tends to burn hotter and longer than softwood. Hardwood is often a great choice if you are using the wood to heat your home for long periods of time. If you need a wood with good coaling qualities (hot coals that are left which continue to give off heat, can even be used to restart a fire), hardwood is your best bet. To get the most out of your hardwood you will want to make sure it has had sufficient time to dry out (or season).
Typical softwood includes varieties such as conifers and evergreen trees. Softwoods are less dense than their hardwood cousins. The softwood density causes the wood to burn hot and fast. Softwood is easier to light than hardwood. Softwood may give off more smoke, making it ideal for your outdoor firewood needs. Hardwood paired with softwood is a great combination. Use the softwood to start your fire, the hardwood for a sustained, long hot burn.
