Tree Services
Proper tree care in Colorado is essential to maintaining the health, safety, and beauty of both urban and natural landscapes. The state’s unique climate—with its dry air, intense sun, seasonal drought, and sudden temperature swings—can stress trees, making them more vulnerable to pests, disease, and storm damage.
Support from Roots and Shoots Tree Care not only preserves property value but also contributes to the long-term resilience of Colorado’s environment.
TREE SERVICES
Pruning
Colorado trees face challenges unique to our climate and environment, and require guidance in developing a healthy and resilient structure that can sustain our extreme weather events. Storm damage is one of the leading causes of decline in Colorado trees, and it is essential to prune trees to maintain a healthy and resilient structure.
Cabeling and Bracing
Installation of dynamic support cables in the upper canopy is a fantastic way to provide additional support in trees that have developed a structure that is vulnerable to failure or that exhibit excessive risk or hazard.
For Branch unions that have experienced a failure, bracing can be necessary to support and maintain and otherwise failed junction. The process involves drilling through the union where two branches meet and installing a bolt to close and support split and vulnerable unions.
Removal
We always work to support and maintain healthy trees, but eventually what goes up must come down. We are specialists in l safe technical tree removal providing a methodical approach to tree removal even under the most hazardous conditions. When it’s time for that tree to go, we ensure it is a worry-free process for you.
Stump Grinding
Once the above ground material is gone, it is time to take care of that stump. We provide a thorough excavation of stumps 8 to 10 inches below grade so you can utilize the space for your next project.
PLANT HEALTH CARE
Every tree faces risk of disease both abiotic (environmental) and biotic (pest), and at Roots and Shoots Tree Care we have the expertise to manage all of the health care challenges your trees face.
The major disease impacting ash trees in and around Boulder in surrounding cities is Emerald Ash Borer (follow the link for further information).
BIOTIC DISEASE
Emerald Ash Borer
Preventative treatment with a systemic insecticide trunk injection protects the tree for 2 years. Trees showing signs and symptoms of emerald ash borer can often be saved with a rapid response treatment.
Sapsucking Insects
These insects (Aphids, Scale, and mealybugs) feed on tree sap from leaves and small stems, and excrete a sugary substance called honeydew which is then colonized by sooty mold fungi resulting in a black staining on surfaces below the tree. Insect populations can be successfully managed with a systemic insecticide injection.
Leaf Feeders
Insects that feed on the leaves of trees. East insects generally do not kill trees, but with prolonged feeding Tree Health will begin to decline. Commonly managed with systemic insecticide injection.
Leaf feeders include:
Elm leaf Miner, elm leaf beetle, Japanese beetle, Aspen leaf Miner, tussock moth, honeylocust leaf hopper, honeylocust plant bug.
Bark and Wood Borers
Wood boring insects feed on the vascular tissue of trees their bike girdling branches and large diameter stems and can severely impact the health of trees. pest populations can be easily managed with a systemic insecticide injection.
Wood boring insects include: Emerald ash borer, honey locust for, bronze Birch borer, shot hole borer, Pine beetle, Ips beetle, lilac Ash borer, elm bark beetle, longhorn beetle, Peachtree borer.
FUNGAL DISEASE
Many fungal infections are of little consequence to overall tree health, however there are a handful of fungal infections that require serious attention.
-
- Ink and Leaf Spot
- Powdery mildew
- Anthracnose
- Cytospora
- Aspen leaf blight
- Cedar apple rust
- Canker disease
BACTERIAL DISEASE
-
- Fireblight
- Slime flux (bacterial wetwood)
- Bacterial leaf scorch
ABIOTIC DISEASE
In Colorado abiotic stresses generally predispose trees to biotic disease, so by preventing abiotic stress, we can pre-empt the more difficult to control biotic diseases.
Drought
Drout is the leading cause of decline in tree health and can lead to additional disease.
Fertilizer
In general Colorado has nutrient poor soil. There is very little nutrient cycling (decomposition of organic matter) occurring, especially in urban areas, and therefore we often see nutrient deficiencies such as iron chlorosis. Fertilizer will help supplement nutrient deficiencies thereby creating a resilient tree.
Iron Chlorosis
Iron chlorosis is a symptom of a larger problem of poor soil health (see fertilizer). It is however easily remedied with an injection of chelated iron to supplement the nutrient deficiency.
Sunscald
Sunscald is damaged to the main stem or branches of a tree is often caused by intense direct sunlight during the winter months to thin bark trees. Causing damage and dieback along the main stem. This can be serious disease needing to decline and eventual death. It is, however, easily avoided by wrapping the trunk from leaf drop in fall to bud break in spring.
Overwatering
Overwatering can be a serious problem with newly planted trees, and the symptoms resemble and are very commonly misinterpreted as drought. This tends to cause tree owners to apply more water further exacerbating the problem. It is recommended to excavate around the root ball to assess overall soil moisture before applying additional water.
